Positive self-talk for mums (and carers!)

As a mum, self-care can often fall low on the priority list.

But every mother and every parent deserves to be well and feel well!

When we think of self-care, we often think of enjoyable or relaxing activities to do, but how often do you take a step back to analyse how you’re treating yourself emotionally?

When we’re feeling stressed, overwhelmed or under the weather, it can become easy to talk negatively about ourselves.

This negative self-talk can have a significant impact on our mental wellbeing – similarly to as if someone else was talking negatively about us.

Negative self-talk can sound like “I can’t do anything right” or “I’m useless”.

When we repeat these thoughts to ourselves, either out loud or in our head, it reinforces to us that we’re right. Overtime, this can lead to increased stress, anxiety, and feelings of worthlessness.


Introducing positive self-talk in your life

When a negative thought pops up, it can help to think to yourself – what would a friend say to me in this moment?

Positive self-talk is about lifting yourself up and being your own cheerleader!

Here’s 10 positive self-talk ideas you can use daily for self-care and to improve your mental wellbeing:

  1. I am strong
  2. I am beautiful
  3. I matter
  4. I am not perfect (and that’s okay!)
  5. I am proud of the parent that I am
  6. I am brave
  7. I am resilient
  8. I am enough
  9. I am everything that my child needs
  10. I am worthy

At first it might feel a bit cheesy to say these things to ourselves.
But if it helps, you can try practicing these together with your child (this is a great way to teach them positive self-talk, too!).
