What is the Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Service?
Our AOD Service offers a range of supports for people affected by alcohol and drug abuse.
Substance addiction can be very harmful to many aspects of life – physical and mental health, relationships with family and friends, work, study, and accommodation, to name a few.
Our counsellors specialise in helping people with problematic alcohol and other drug use, and to address the social and emotional challenges, and relationship strain or breakdown that is associated with addiction.
We can also provide counselling for the family members of people affected by alcohol and other drug abuse. We help families to deal with the stress and emotional impacts of having a loved one fall into addiction – and we can support families to rebuild and strengthen relationships, knowing that good family relationships can often help people to recover from addiction.
The service includes:
- alcohol and other drug use assessment and referral to other agencies
- community programs aimed at supporting and strengthening families
- compassionate, non-judgemental and confidential counselling and support for individuals struggling with addiction
- compassionate, non-judgemental and confidential counselling and support for families, friends and parents who are dealing with the direct or indirect effects of a loved one experiencing substance addiction
Benefits of the AOD Service
We provide holistic and flexible support at all stages of alcohol/drug use and recovery. The number of AOD sessions provided is determined on a case-by-case basis.
We can link you with a counsellor – or organise an interpreter - who speaks your language and understands your culture.
You don’t need a referral to access our Alcohol and Other Drug Service. You can call one of our branches closest to you to make an appointment or learn more.
All AOD counselling and support sessions are confidential, and your personal information will not be disclosed without your consent (except when counsellors or social workers are required to by law – for example, to protect you or someone you know from harm).
AOD Service for migrant communities
CatholicCare offers a specialist AOD service to meet the needs of diverse communities.
Our bilingual CALD (Culturally and Linguistically Diverse) counsellors can provide culturally sensitive counselling, support and information in different community languages (see locations for details).
We also provide targeted playgroups for Vietnamese communities in the City of Yarra.
