We’ve launched our 2026 Easter Appeal, sharing the powerful stories of refugees and people seeking asylum as they rebuild their lives in Australia.
At the heart of this year’s Appeal is Zahra*, an Afghan mother who arrived in Australia three years ago seeking safety, dignity and a future for her children after fleeing violence and oppression.
“CatholicCare did not just teach me how to survive,” Zahra says. “They gave me strength. They helped me raise my voice. They reminded me that I am human.”
Zahra’s journey has been shaped by conflict, displacement and heartbreaking separation from her children.
“When I landed in Australia, I felt like I had died, a body without a soul,” she recalls. “A mother’s heart is not divided by distance. It is broken by it.”
Arriving alone, traumatised and physically unwell, Zahra faced overwhelming uncertainty. Through CCV’s Asylum Seeker Support Program, she found people who listened, believed her story and walked beside her as she began to rebuild her life.
With support, Zahra has accessed medical care, studied English, completed first aid and food safety qualifications, and begun training in healthcare. She is determined to one day give back to the community that supported her.
“They are not just a service,” she says. “They are building the human. They are building the future of a person.”
Zahra’s story is one of six being shared as part of this year’s Easter Appeal through a series of short videos. Together, these stories offer a powerful insight into the realities of displacement and the impact of compassionate, practical support in helping people move from isolation toward stability and belonging.
Zahra’s journey is not yet complete. Her deepest hope remains to be reunited with her children. Today, she stands stronger and no longer alone.
“Please don’t close the door of hope,” she says. “For people like me, CatholicCare is the door that is light.”
This Easter, you’re invited to watch Zahra’s story and the stories of others like her, and to be part of the journey toward hope, dignity and belonging.
