We are deeply saddened by the recent passing of John Sheldon, the inaugural Board Chair of CCV, and a cherished leader within our community.
We are deeply saddened by the recent passing of John Sheldon, the inaugural Board Chair of CatholicCare Victoria, and a cherished leader within our community.
John’s commitment to our mission was unwavering. He first joined CatholicCare Melbourne/Gippsland as Board Chair in February 2015, guiding the organisation with wisdom, compassion, and a steady hand. His leadership was instrumental during a time of significant change, culminating in the formation of CatholicCare Victoria – uniting CatholicCare Melbourne/Gippsland, Centacare Ballarat, and CatholicCare Sandhurst.
In December 2020, John was appointed the inaugural Chair of the newly formed CatholicCare Victoria, helping to shape the foundations of the organisation we are today. When CatholicCare Victoria officially commenced operations in January 2021, John’s term as Chair of CatholicCare Melbourne/Gippsland concluded, but his service to the broader mission continued with great dedication.
John went on to serve as Chair of CatholicCare Victoria’s Board until December 2022, when he passed the role to Ross Castle. His commitment to Catholic social services extended even further, serving as the Archbishop of Melbourne’s representative on the Board of CatholicCare Victoria Tasmania from March 2022.
Across every role, John brought integrity, clarity of purpose, and a genuine care for the people and communities we serve. His legacy is woven into the fabric of CatholicCare Victoria—through the structures he helped build, the values he championed, and the countless lives touched by his leadership.
We give thanks for John’s life, his service, and his enduring contribution to our mission. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of working alongside him.
May he rest in peace.
