This week is National Reconciliation Week (NRW) – a powerful time for reflection, learning, and action as we walk together toward a more just and equitable Australia. This week invites all of us to acknowledge the past, listen deeply, and commit to healing and reconciliation.
Acknowledgement of Country
In continued support of truth-telling and reconciliation, CatholicCare Victoria acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country throughout Victoria and their deep spiritual and cultural connections to land, waterways, and community.
We pay our respects to Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today. We acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded.
We are committed to the cultural safety of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, including our staff and the communities we serve across Victoria.
National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June) invites all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to reconciliation.
These dates commemorate two significant milestones:
As Bishop Charles Gauci reflects in the article via Melbourne Catholic:
“We need to prayerfully reflect, be guided by the Holy Spirit, listen to each other with respect, and walk together to find the best way forward.”
This message reminds us that reconciliation is not only a civic responsibility, but also a deeply human and spiritual journey—one that calls for humility, compassion, and courage.
The 2025 theme, Bridging Now to Next, calls on all Australians to step forward together, drawing on the lessons of the past to shape a more inclusive and just future.
This theme resonates with the call to be people of peace and justice, working to eliminate barriers to equality and dignity for all.
Reconciliation is everyone’s business. It happens where we live, work, and gather. Here are some ways you can contribute:
As the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholic Council reminds us in the article via Melbourne Catholic:
“Now more than ever, we need to place our trust and hopes in the Holy Spirit and come together as a nation, undivided. We are one people under God.”
