About the Program

A professional development program that helps teachers build emotionally intelligent classrooms through Emotion Coaching.

Designed for primary and secondary school settings, the program builds teachers’ and students’ emotion understanding and regulation skills to foster a positive classroom climate and strengthen social-emotional learning.

Tuning in to Students equips teachers with skills in Emotion Coaching to:

  • Identify early signs of student distress
  • Validate and support students’ emotional experiences
  • Guide emotion regulation and problem-solving
  • Promote a calm, respectful, and engaged classroom emotional climate

Flexible delivery options

Full Program Format:

  • Session 1 – Full-day workshop (9:00 am – 3:30 pm, or until 4:30 pm if the school permits)
  • Session 2 – Emotion Coaching: Fears (90 – 120 minutes)
  • Session 3 – Emotion Coaching: Anger (90 – 120 minutes)
  • Optional Session 4/Booster – Collaborative Problem Solving (90 – 120 minutes)

Tuning in to Students Introductory Talk

An ideal entry point for schools or staff new to Emotion Coaching or when there are time constraints.

The introduction to Emotion Coaching talks can be offered school-wide, with smaller groups, or one-to-one.

Format options:

  • 1 hour – Introductory talk on Emotion Coaching
  • 2 hours – Introductory talk plus experiential activities.
  • 3 hours – Introductory talk with interactive discussion and experiential activities (this was used successfully in a trial with Norwegian primary school teachers, followed by 6 x 90 minute small group sessions, delivered fortnightly).
