About the Workshop

Supporting parents to foster comfortable conversations with their children

Parents can find it difficult to talk with their children about where babies come from, or the changes during puberty. Others may feel they don’t have adequate knowledge or a suitable approach for these conversations.

But without these conversations, children become reliant on information and values gathered from peers and media.

Staying silent also sends a message to children that these topics are taboo, meaning they are less likely to approach their parents with concerns.

The Wonder of Living program encourages and empowers parents as primary educators

We provide parents opportunities for comfortable conversations about human growth and development with their children.

Our facilitators bring over 30 years’ experience providing sensitive, engaging presentations for students, parents and primary educators.

In-class, parent only, and family sessions available

A family-friendly program that has been reviewed by Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS) and is aligned with Catholic teaching and values.

Program topics and materials are interchangeable to suit the ages and year levels of participating students.

We offer a range of education options and session durations for schools, both in-person and online, including:

Option 1: Parent/ carer & child sessions

The purpose of parent/carer and child sessions are to encourage good communication between parents and children. These sessions include presentations using stories, shared conversations, activities, and take-home materials.

Parent/carer & child session topics:

  • puberty facts
  • emotional ups and downs
  • handling change and uncertainty
  • talking to a trusted adult for support or information
  • identifying social media pressure
  • acting in ways that are safe

Option 2: Parent/carer-only sessions

Parent-only sessions provide information to parents about the in-class puberty education sessions that will be provided to their children. It also gives them an opportunity to preview session content and ask questions, and encourages them to continue the conversations at home with their children.

Option 3: In-class student-only sessions

The in-class program is provided over two sessions, with the first to provide education, and the second to answer questions from students.

In-class session topics:

  • different stages in life from conception to old age
  • body changes during puberty
  • media and social media messages about body image
  • making safe decisions about inappropriate internet content
  • seeking help from trusted adults

After the first session, students are invited to submit anonymous questions about the topics covered.

These questions are collected by the teacher, and passed on to the parents and to our CatholicCare Victoria facilitator.

Our facilitator will then answer students’ questions related to puberty and body changes in session two.
